Travelling to Europe from Canada: do I need an ETIAS?
Canadian citizens must obtain an ETIAS authorization to enter Europe. This formality will become indispensable, even for a simple tourist stay of a few days in the Schengen area.
What is ETIAS?
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is an electronic travel authorization, to be requested online before departure. It is not a visa: it is an automated security check for visa-exempt travelers like Canadians.
Once issued, the ETIAS is electronically linked to the passport and is valid for 3 years, or until the passport expires.
Why is ETIAS mandatory for Canadians?
The European Union is introducing ETIAS to improve security of entry to its territory, while keeping the procedure simple and fast for regular travellers. The system is inspired by the Canadian ESTA, already in place for certain visitors to Canada.
Who should apply for an ETIAS?
All Canadian citizens will have to apply for it, even for a short stay of less than 90 days, for the purpose of :
- Tourist
- Professional
- Family
- Transit
Children must also have their own ETIAS authorization (free for under-18s and over-70s).
How do I apply for an ETIAS online?
Here are the 5 steps of the ETIAS application for Canadians:

- Provide personal information: identity, passport, medical history and recent travels
- Pay fees online (unless you’re under 18 or over 70)
- Receive confirmation by e-mail within 96 hours

Do I need a Schengen visa in addition to ETIAS?
