Travelling in Europe: who can obtain an ETIAS and under what conditions?
Who can apply for an ETIAS?
ETIAS is only for travelers who are exempt from visa requirements for entry into the Schengen area.
You must therefore be a national of an eligible country, according to the official list regularly updated by the European Union.
Passport requirements
A biometric passport is required.
It must :
- be electronically readable (with chip)
- have a passport valid for at least 6 months after your planned date of arrival in the EU
Duration and conditions of stay
The ETIAS authorizes stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
It allows multiple entries into the Schengen area during its period of validity (up to 3 years).
Safety checks
Before issuing the ETIAS, the EU analyzes the traveler’s profile.
You will need to provide :
- Your criminal record (terrorism, trafficking, violence…)
- Your medical history (communicable diseases)
- Your most recent tripsto high-risk areas
Inconsistencies or potential threats may result in automatic refusal.
Special cases: minors and seniors
- Minors must have their own ETIAS, even if they are traveling with their parents.
- Children and over-70s do not pay the €7 fee.
What to do if you are refused?
If your ETIAS application is rejected:
- You will receive an e-mail explaining the decision.
- You can submit a new, corrected application.
- An official appeal is also possible in the event of an unjustified refusal.
