List of countries eligible for ETIAS: destinations and affected nationalities
ETIAS applies to two types of countries: destination countries —the 30 European countries where ETIAS will be required for entry—and countries of origin —the approximately 60 nationalities whose citizens will need to obtain this authorization before traveling. These two lists are separate and complementary.
Countries where ETIAS is required for entry
An ETIAS authorization is required to enter the 29 countries of the Schengen Area as well as Cyprus. It is not valid for Ireland, which is not part of the Schengen Area. Bulgaria and Romania fully joined the Schengen Area on January 1, 2025.

Nationalities whose citizens must obtain an ETIAS
Nationals of the following countries, who are currently exempt from visa requirements for the Schengen Area, will be required to obtain an ETIAS authorization once the system launches in the fourth quarter of 2026. This list is periodically reviewed by the European Commission based on bilateral agreements and security assessments.

Who does not need an ETIAS?
Citizens of European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries are exempt from the ETIAS requirement—they enjoy freedom of movement within the Schengen Area. Nationals of countries not exempt from the Schengen visa requirement are not eligible for ETIAS: they must apply for a standard Schengen visa. Visit our page on the difference between ETIAS and the Schengen visa to understand which procedure applies to your situation.
In addition, holders of a residence permit or residence card issued by a Schengen country, as well as holders of a valid long-stay visa, are exempt from the requirement to obtain an ETIAS. To learn more about the eligibility requirements, visit our page on ETIAS eligibility requirements.
Is the list final?
No. The list of nationalities eligible for ETIAS is reviewed periodically by the European Commission, based on bilateral agreements between the EU and third countries, as well as security assessments. A country may be added to or removed from the list following a review. To view the most recent official list, visit the official ETIAS website.
