ETIAS processing times: How long does it take to get authorization?
In the vast majority of cases, ETIAS applications are processed within a few minutes by an automated system. However, some applications require manual review, which can extend the processing time to several weeks. It is therefore recommended that you do not wait until the last minute to submit your application.
Summary of processing times by type of request
| Type of treatment | Estimated time | Applicable cases |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic processing | A few minutes | Most requests — profile with no flags |
| Additional verification | Up to 96 hours | Additional screening required by security systems |
| Manual examination | Up to 14 days | Case requiring human review |
| Special cases | Up to 30 days | Complex cases requiring consultation with national authorities |
How does automatic processing work?
As soon as the application is submitted and payment is confirmed, the ETIAS system performs an automated real-time check. The application is simultaneously checked against several European and international databases: the Schengen Information System (SIS), Europol, Interpol, and other databases related to travel and security data.
If no suspicious matches are detected, authorization is granted automatically and the result is sent by email within a few minutes. This applies to the vast majority of travelers.
Why might it take longer?
Several situations may trigger an additional review and extend the processing time:
| Reason | Possible extension |
|---|---|
| Partial match with a security database | 96 hours |
| Incomplete or inconsistent information on the form | 96 hours to 14 days |
| Criminal history or police records to be checked | 14 days |
| Consultation with the national authorities of the destination country | Up to 30 days |
In such cases, a national ETIAS unit in the destination country will process the application manually. The applicant may be contacted to provide additional information or documents.
When should you submit your ETIAS application?
It is recommended that you submit your ETIAS application at least 96 hours before departure, or 4 days in advance. This allows for any potential processing delays without jeopardizing your trip.
For travelers who are cautious or whose circumstances may require further review, it is recommended that they submit their application several weeks before departure. ETIAS is not an emergency procedure, and no expedited application option is available.
How do I receive the results of my request?
The result of your ETIAS application will be sent by email to the address you provided during the application process. The authorization is also electronically linked to your passport—you do not need to print it, although you may do so if you wish. For more information, visit our page on printing your ETIAS.
You can check the status of your application online at any time. Visit our ETIAS status check page for instructions.
Frequently Asked Questions About ETIAS Processing Times
Is there an expedited ETIAS process?
No. There is no expedited procedure or urgent processing for ETIAS. The processing time depends solely on the results of the automated checks and, if necessary, a manual review of the application. The only way to avoid delays is to submit the application well in advance.
What happens if I haven’t received a response by the time I leave?
If the application is still being processed on the date of departure, the traveler will not be allowed to board a flight to Schengen countries subject to ETIAS. Carriers (airlines, ferries, coaches) are required to verify authorization before boarding. It is therefore essential to plan ahead and not to travel without confirmed authorization.
Does the processing time vary depending on the applicant’s nationality?
The standard processing time is the same for all eligible nationalities. However, certain profiles may automatically trigger additional checks in accordance with the security agreements in force between the EU and certain third countries. In such cases, the extended processing times are beyond the applicant’s control.
How far in advance can we submit the request?
There is no deadline for submitting an ETIAS application prior to travel. The authorization is valid for three years from the date it is issued. It is therefore possible to apply well in advance of your trip, particularly for travelers planning multiple stays in Europe. To learn more about the validity period, visit our ETIAS validity page.
