Renewing Your ETIAS: When and How to Submit a New Application
ETIAS cannot be extended or renewed in the strict sense of the term—there is no simplified renewal procedure. When your authorization expires, or if it becomes invalid due to the renewal of your passport, you must submit a new, complete application under the same conditions as the first one. The procedure is the same, the fee is the same, and the processing time is similar.

When should you start the renewal process?

There is no simplified procedure for renewals. The renewal application follows exactly the same process as the initial application:

Renewal Fee
Renewal costs €20—the same fee as for the initial application. Exemptions still apply based on your age at the time of the new application: if you were under 18 when you first applied and are now 19, you’ll have to pay the €20 for the renewal. Can I travel with my old, still-valid ETIAS if I’ve renewed my passport?
No. ETIAS is electronically linked to the passport number used during the application. If you are traveling with a new passport, your old ETIAS—even if it is still valid—is no longer valid for that new document. Border officials and airlines will see that your new passport is not associated with any valid ETIAS. You must submit a new ETIAS application using your new passport before traveling.

Can I apply for a new ETIAS before the old one expires?
Yes. There is nothing preventing you from submitting a new ETIAS application before your current authorization expires, especially if you are renewing your passport. The new authorization will be linked to the new passport and will take effect as soon as it is approved. The old authorization (linked to the old passport) becomes invalid as soon as you travel with the new passport.
Is renewal automatically granted if the initial application was approved?
No. Each application is subject to a new, comprehensive check against security databases. A previous authorization does not guarantee approval of a new request—the applicant’s circumstances may have changed. In the vast majority of cases, however, applicants with no outstanding alerts have their renewals approved within minutes.
My ETIAS expires while I’m traveling—what happens?
It is strongly discouraged for your ETIAS to expire during your stay in the Schengen Area. Your ETIAS must be valid for the entire duration of your stay. If your authorization expires during your stay, you will be considered to be in an irregular situation by border authorities—especially if you travel to another Schengen country or take an intra-European flight.
